36 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH: JOSEPH MASCOLO'S DEBUT AS STEFANO DiMERA...

For the first time online, here is the dialogue of Joseph Mascolo's debut as Stefano DiMera! As you can notice in this first scene, from Episode # 4106, which aired on January 18, 1982, Stefano's name was originally spelled Stephano in his first script. (Ironically, the same thing happened with another long-running character...Marlena's name was originally spelled Marlene in her initial script). Look for additional scenes from Stefano's first script to be posted at a later date.

Head Writer: Pat Falken Smith
Script Writer: Pat Falken Smith

A PROJECTION ROOM IN ATHENS.

(PLUSH, VERY DARK. WE HEAR TONY DIMERA'S VOICE, BUT CAN NOT MAKE OUT THE TWO FIGURES SITTING IN THE COMFORTABLE CHAIRS. THE SCREEN IS BLANK AT THE MOMENT)

TONY: That is the story as I know it, father. The whole story. If you want our family to succeed in establishing roots in America, you must sacrifice Stuart Whyland. I know you need time to think about it. Let's roll the film while you consider what I have told you.

(TONY LEANS FORWARD AND PRESSES A BUTTON ON THE CONSOLE. AND FILM CLIPS FROM THE PARTY HE GAVE NEW YEAR'S EVE APPEAR ON THE SCREEN. PEOPLE ARE TALKING, BUT THERE IS NO SOUND. NOTE: SHOW ONLY THE CHARACTERS WHO ARE IN THIS EPISODE. AVOID CAMERA CUTS WITHIN THE FILM).

TONY: I had hidden cameras at my New Year's Eve party so that I could get closeups of the women I felt were worthy candidates for the DiMera family. When you see an interesting face, tell me. And I'll freeze frame the action.

(THEY WATCH IN SILENCE FOR A MOMENT AS WE INTERCUT FROM TONY AND STEPHANO TO THE FEMALE FACES WE WANT IN THE LIVING ROOM OF THE WHYLAND MANSION)

STEPHANO: That one.

(TONY PUSHES A BUTTON TO FREEZE FRAME ON MARLENA EVANS)

TONY: Marlena Evans. An eminent lady psychiatrist at the Medical Center.

STEPHANO: Beautiful.

TONY: And capable of having children.

(HE PUSHES A BUTTON TO RESUME THE FILM. SILENCE AS THEY WATCH THE ACTION OF THE PARTY. INTERCUT AS NEEDED)

STEPHANO: That one.

(TONY PUSHES A BUTTON TO FREEZE FRAME. DO NOT SHOW SCREEN)

TONY: Mary Anderson. Majority stockholder in Anderson Manufacturing. Divorced. Available.

STEPHANO: Proceed.

(TONY PUSHES A BUTTON AND THE FILM CONTINUES, THE TWO MEN WATCHING IN SILENCE)

STEPHANO: That one.

(TONY PUSHES A BUTTON TO FREEZE FRAME ON JULIE WILLIAMS)

TONY: Unavailable.

STEPHANO: Her name.

TONY: Julie Williams. She is married to Doug Williams, who runs a large gambling casino on the lake.

STEPHANO: Julie Williams. She will be the one.

TONY: But I told you she's already taken.

STEPHANO: Nonsense. When I want a woman, it doesn't matter if she's taken or not.

FADE TO: BLACK.

Principal Guest Stars: Week of Tuesday 1/2/18-Friday 1/5/18

Leann Hunley - Anna DiMera

2017 Soaps in Review: Romances, Returns and Grab the Tissue Moments

look back at the good, the bad and the indifferent on soaps in 2017.

Happy 2018 soap fans! Soaps.com took a look back at 2017 and chose a few standout soap opera moments from "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Days of our Lives," "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless:" good, bad and indifferent. The following made an impact on our writers…

Most Shocking Romps:

Days:
Lani and Eli. Not because they had sex despite being in love with other people, but because of the timing. It lessened the emotional impact of Gabi talking JJ down from killing himself to have Lani run into Eli's arms because she thought her man cheated on her. At least wait until the next week before segueing from a suicide attempt to a love quadrangle.

Most Anticlimactic Storylines:

Days:
Nicole and Brady rekindling their fire should have been exciting to watch while they were on the run from Deimos. Sadly, buying a hardware store in Canada and fearing a sketchy porn addicted neighbor did not cut it. Not even the addition of "As the World Turns" fan favorite Jennifer Landon could save that story.

Most Annoying Characters:

.
Days:
Soaps.com writer Dustin Cushman's pick was, "Everyone that lives in the teens apartment on Days." I am in complete agreement, but I have to single out Claire. She is whiny, frail, entitled and not at all how I like my female soap characters.

Most Notable Recasts:

.
Days:
Soaps.com writer Christine Fix reminded me that recasting Anjelica Deveraux with Morgan Fairchild "didn't turn out well and ended badly with her death." I could not agree more. It was a questionable casting choice to say the least.

Biggest Returns:

Days:
There's so many to choose from this year from the NBC soap. Will's return from the dead storyline probably had the most impact and brought more than one fan favorite back, but Vivian came in just under the deadline and will probably be the biggest pot stirrer and most fun in 2018.

Biggest Grab the Tissue Moments:

Days:
The fallout of JJ shooting Theo was dark and intense, especially JJ's standalone episode. The performances have been incredible and more than a little tissue worthy

Most Reinvigorating Events:

Days:
Ron Carlivati coming on as head writer shook things up in a good way. While not everything was gold, he brought so many characters and actors back, spreading them out across several entertaining storylines. He also allowed viewers to enjoy the love between favorite couples again and course-corrected poorly matched pairings in the process.

Most Entertaining Pairings:

Days:
I love bitter, snarky Brady. He's way more entertaining this way and his cat and mouse game with Eve is a treat to watch.

Biggest Saw It Coming Moments:

Days:
Deimos's deeds had become so dastardly, the only place for him to go was six feet under and his death predictably became a whodunit.

Only on a Soap:

Days:
One word: Doppelgangers.
