Deconstructing B&B:July 24 - 28
"Eric disowned Ridge, and even Sheila was sobbing"
Wow, "B&B" is hitting it out of the park with drama, a hint of comedy and romance, and even a socially aware storyline...and we still have a fashion duel in Monte Carlo to look forward to coming up. Awesome. Thoughts:
In a classic Dollar Bill move, Caroline’s skyscraper obsessed uncle decided to propel Thomas back into his niece’s arms by telling him she was dying. Bill’s nonchalance about the outrageous tactic, his smug nodding and winking at Caroline behind Thomas’ back, and his grave lamentation that the disease was so rare it didn’t even have a name had me in stitches. However, part of me felt as infuriated as Caroline at his gall, as well as disappointed that the lie would cast a pall on Thomas and Sally’s fashion show, and worried about Sally getting her heart broken. The twist is that even if Caroline insists to Thomas that she’s not dying, at this point, he’s not going to believe her because of Bill’s spin. In a nutshell, this storyline brought out a flurry of different reactions and emotions, which equates to soapy goodness!
Katie and Wyatt are circling each other like blushing, awkward teenagers and I love it. Though I haven't been Wyatt's biggest fan, they have genuine chemistry, and while both have baggage, neither of them have current entanglements, which means this pairing would be gloriously triangle-free. Hallelujah! It’s also fun that so many will be deliciously shocked by Katie and Wyatt getting together - including them.
How do you know when a scene is heartbreakingly, devastatingly, agonizingly poignant? When Sheila Carter gets the feels, of course! Ridge showed up at the hotel where Eric is squirreled away with Sheila, who practically has him in a trance in light of his vulnerability and general doddering nature, and took all the blame for the nasty goings-on with Quinn in an effort to give his dad an ‘out’ to forgive his wife and go home. Ah the tragedy – if only Ridge hadn’t kissed Quinn in the first place! In any case, what ensued was a speech from Eric guaranteed to peak Ridge’s guilt levels before concluding in a Godfatherly head kiss as he disowned the son he will always love. Cue the sobbing and blatting as Ridge, destroyed, exited with tears rolling down his face, Eric strode to the window to gaze out forlornly, and Sheila’s hands flew to her mouth to stifle her own emotional outburst. Argh our poor hearts.
Texting and driving.
In the last Deconstructing B&B, Coco and RJ’s texting and driving storyline went MIA, but the important issue was picked up again this week as Brooke laid into the lucky-to-be-alive teens about how much worse the outcome could have been. She shared a cautionary tale about a high school boyfriend who died while fiddling with his knob (on his radio!) and driving, and reiterated the need to leave texts and calls until parked in order to keep themselves and everyone else on the road safe. A timely message indeed. In conjunction with this storyline, B&B teamed with the NHTSA for a texting and driving PSA. Well done.
Not a whole lot happened to advance story today, though everyone arrived in Monaco for the Forrester vs. Spectra showdown (can't wait!), and Quinn learned that Eric is holed up in a hotel with Sheila hovering. The end sequence with Eric and Quinn thinking about one another got to me a bit. Sigh.
This is an opinion piece.
